Nothing But Net

We have at our house a paper grocery bag set up in a corner to collect paper and other recyclables that routinely  becomes a three point shooting target as we attempt to drain our game winning buzzer beaters. Jordan, nothing but net, and Bulls win, is what I can frequently be heard shouting with each successful attempt.

Nothing but net took on new meaning when I ventured to Lake Waconia and missed a musky that every musky fisherman dreams about.  I won’t speculate as to how long it was or how much it weighed, all I can say is that it was freaky big.  An absolute beast.

Full moon cycle, perfect green weeds, overcast, and slight ripple to the water.  The table was set.  Ten minutes in I felt a strike and set the hook.  Right away I knew it was a heavy fish.  After several runs and a trip around the boat.  I grabbed the net for my dream fish and then I made a rookie mistake. One of the treble hooks caught in the net and the behemoth shook itself free as I was unable to get the fish into net. Had it been a smaller fish the body would have collapsed into the oversize net.  This fish was simply too long and thick to get the other half of the fish inside.   Gravity took over once it came loose and away it vanished into the depths. Nothing but net.

I probably should have left and called it a day but I stuck with it and was rewarded with a 19″ largemouth bass and another smaller one that attacked the musky lure I was throwing.  The sunset, moon rise and rainbow were all pretty spectacular too.  If I had only got that beast in the boat.  That will haunt me for days.

Photos of scenery and fish from the last three days:
