On The Highway To Fish

September 17, 2016

September 11, 2016

I usually try to work in an annual trip to the Vermillion River in hopes of catching a trophy brown.  Today was the day. I hoped.  Plus, I wanted to see how the stretch where I helped remove buckthorn as part of a Trout Unlimited project fished.

We all have our quirks and generally I try not to listen to the radio if out driving on Sundays.  Sometimes it is nice just to hear the sound of the road.  Sometimes it is a nice break from the noise and all the same old songs you hear on any radio station.  Today was different though as my son had requested AC/DC before his last hockey game and I still had AC/DC’s classic, Highway to Hell, disc in the disc player. I can still picture one of our Peewee hockey goalies bringing his boom box into the locker room before a game at Augsburg Arena in the early 80’s, which at that time had some of the nastiest and dingy locker rooms around, and cranking AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds.  Amazing how AC/DC resonated then with kids, including me, and still today, as my son and his buddies still pump out the AC/DC tunes before games.  I may be nearing 50, but the teenager inside me still burns fierce at times.  I hit the road a little after 5:30 a.m, turned up the the sound and headed for the Vermillion.

Wind and leaves whisper

falls golds, greens, browns and yellows

the soul, it mellows

Amazing where, how and when one finds inspiration.

Not known for it’s hatches, the Vermillion is streamer water and that is what I tossed. All to no avail.  I tried 3 different stretches of river.  The most difficult to fish was the stretch where we removed buckthorn.  The river there is very tight, narrow and not a lot of movement to the water.

Maybe next year.
