Lake Zumbra

July 5, 2016

July 3, 2016

Last years trip to Zumbra was a major bummer in that I ended up destroying my mobile phone by putting it in a non-water proof pouch of my new waders. Why it would be non-waterproof, I have no idea.  I thought everything would be water tight.  Wrong!  None too happy to discover a water logged phone when I went to take a picture of the plump bass that I caught.

Oh, well.  July 3, 2016, and I’m back.  This time with the boat.  I’d heard and seen from my first and only trip that the gravel access could be challenging, but it wasn’t too bad.  Very shallow and I could see where it would be a problem for bigger boats.  Started working the pads and milfoil with a buzz bait.  Clear water.  Lots of cabbage too.  Nothing going on top.  Switched to a white spinner bait with a copper Colorado blade and caught one very nice bass.  Things went very cold after that though. Tried a couple of crank baits, the Pit Boss, jig worm, Rattle Trap, chatter bait, but all I could manage was three pike.  Back to the jig worm.  Had a really nice bass attack it.  After the first wallowing jump  I could see it heading for the surface again like a nuclear missile shot from an attack submarine and I just let her head for the sky where she shook the hook free.  Awesome jump!

There were lots of fish boiling in the shallow reeds and I investigated to see several carp milling about.  In doing so I also noticed several smaller bass roaming around and ended up catching one on the jig worm.  Headed for deeper water and caught another on the jig worm.  I don’t know why but I switched to a swim jig tipped with a Gander Mountain 5″ Magic Shad Swim Minnow and soon hooked into another nice pike.  Then I proceeded to catch two more nice bass and another pike before I needed to head home.  First fish on a swim jig but I liked the way it fished and definitely liked the results.
