Lake Waconia

June 11, 2016

It has been years since I fished Lake Waconia and I thought I’d give it a shot today.  The reason I haven’t fished it much is that I’ve never really had much luck there, either in the winter through the ice or in the summer.  I don’t know what it is.  Mental block?  It’s not that much different than any other lake in the Twin Cities in terms of water quality/clarity, weed composition and fish population, but for some reason I’ve never really been able to put it together.

Good thing I arrived at the access at five a.m.  There were already a half dozen boats on the water and a couple that I had to wait in line for at the launch.  The lot was full and cars/trailers were lined up along the street by the time I left at nine a.m.  To say the lake was busy is an understatement.   People trolling for walleyes.  Trolling for musky.  Casting for musky.  Bass boats galore.  Each piece of structure had a boat or two on it.  The pressure our lakes receive is immense and it is clear that we need to continue with catch and release.  There is simply no way the fish populations could withstand the pressure and success we anglers experience given the technology we have at our disposal if we didn’t practice catch and release.

Anyways, it was good to be on the water and I struggled to catch anything at first.  I threw musky baits for about an hour and switched to bass.  None of the boats within view were catching anything either and most of the bass fisherman were throwing plastics. No sense throwing plastics as I could see they weren’t setting the world afire.  I started throwing a rattle-trap around milfoil clumps and caught a bass on the second cast.  That seemed to be the pattern for the rest of the morning.  Finding clumps of milfoil on hard bottom points.  Caught eight bass had another six on that jumped and threw the hooks.  Missed a couple other strikes as well.    Nothing huge, but it was nice to have consistent action.  It actually seemed like I  knew what I was doing on Lake Waconia for once.
