Minnetonka Morning

May 25, 2015

5:30 a.m. – Maxwell Bay

While there are not many better lakes in Minnesota to fish for Largemouth Bass than Lake Minnetonka it feels like I’ve fished certain parts a zillion times.  Therefore, I’ve been trying new spots each time I go in hopes of keeping it fresh. I Started out in Stubbs Bay but wasn’t impressed by the dingy water and lack of weeds around the docks. I didn’t have a good read on the water and left after about twenty minutes. Next stop, Maxwell Bay.  Fished a really nice shoreline with rip rap, sand, a mix of weeds that wasn’t all milfoil, clearer water and a nice drop off into deep water.  One small northern pike but that was it.  North Arm – fished a shallow sandy point, nothing.  Tried a weedy bay, nothing.  Lots of bass boats prowling Maxwell, Crystal, North Arm – lots of movement, so I don’t think they were doing much better.

Big Island – finally had a nice chunky bass hit a black spinner bait.  Threw the hooks at boat side but at least it was a fish.  Tried a rocky point and caught two small bass on a sunfish patterned crankbait.  Moved to another point and saw a keeper walleye sitting in about four feet of water in the sand and sparse weeds.  Managed to connect with a 16″ largemouth.

Closed out the day drifting a Lindy Rig tipped with a leech.  Worked the 15′ weed line down to about 22′ along two different points where I’ve had success in the past on dark, cloudy days and scratched out another 16″ bass.  No walleyes.

Sorry – no photos.  More on that in the next post.
