Fish(less) Lake

October 6, 2013

Sunday, September 22.  A birthday party, a women’s running/cycling race in our neighborhood and my wife being sick seemed to conspire against my fishing plans.  The birthday party and sleepover that my daughter was attending was a good 30 – 35 minutes away in Maple Grove and with my wife being sick, I would need to pick her up at 10 a.m.  The race in our neighborhood would have the streets restricted from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.  Consulting my dog-earred copy of Sybil Smith’s Twin Cities Fishing Guide I found a lake, Fish Lake, that was relatively close to where I had to pick up my daughter and was on the water at the crack of dawn.

I had never fished Fish Lake before so I was pleasantly surprised by the nice park and launch area.  There was a pretty good breeze out of the S/SE and I focused my efforts on the pads and slop as it was out of the breeze and was recommended by the experts in the Fishing Guide.  I had a number of fish nip at my buzz baits and artificial frogs, but nothing really pounced aggressively and I missed on all of them.  And, I was just off – call it bad mojo.  I felt tired and was a little testy (good thing there was no on one to snap at).   I probably spent too much time in this area but one’s range is limited with only a trolling motor for locomotion.   At about eight a.m. I set out for a stretch docks that felt approachable and safe given the conditions.  Right away I had a nice 2-3 pound bass on a spinner bait that made a couple of aerial leaps and tossed the hook. I had a couple more strikes on a jig worm but in the end, I didn’t get anything in the boat.  Pondering my efforts on the way back to the launch, I was disappointed in my effort and lack of fish but would like to give Fish Lake another shot sometime as my effort didn’t do it justice.  Maybe next time.
