Bush Lake

After what seemed like a relatively cool stretch of August, things have turned summer like again. I was all rigged up ready to give the muskies a shot on Lake Nokomis and hit the road at a little after 5:30 a.m. That would get me there at about 6 a.m. which is when the boat ramp opens for inspections.  One problem though, as I approached the lake from Cedar Avenue I was greeted by a sign that stated: road closed for event. Great – glad I rolled out of bed.

Calling an audible I decided to give Bush Lake another shot even though the day before hadn’t been that productive.  The wind wasn’t supposed to pick up for a few hours so I sped back home swapped out rods and my tackle box and was on the water by 6:30 a.m.  Things got off to a promising start with a 10″ bass that pounced on a spinnerbait that I was retrieving past a clump of coon tail weeds.  Unfortunately, that didn’t turn into a pattern and I was soon trying buzz baits, jig worms, and crank baits in hopes that I could find something that would work consistently.  The shallows seemed devoid of any activity as did the deep weed line.  Trolling to the next spot with a minnow patterned crankbait I felt a solid thump in about ten feet of water and landed this feisty northern pike.

Upon reaching my destination I switched to a jig and pig which, I had fished with success before. Again nothing.  At the beginning of the year I had picked up some Bomber cranks in a bargain bin and decided to give them a try, as I hadn’t fished them all year.  They had a nice bluegill finish and I started casting parallel to the break in about ten feet of water before it fell off into the depths.  It wasn’t too long before I caught another northern pike and then a bass and then another.

In a short span I landed another five bass and four more northern pike before calling it a day. It was nice to catch a decent number of fish even if they weren’t giants. Maybe next time.
