Left Behind

Meet Ms. Peepers.  Isn’t she adorable?

At long last, the ducklings hatched sometime on the 27th and 28th as they had vacated the nest by 7 a.m. on the 28th.  Where did they go?  No idea.  Vanished in the night without a proper introduction.  How rude.

Of the 8 eggs in the clutch, two un-hatched eggs remained along with one developmentally challenged duckling that was left behind.

Not wanting to let nature take its course my wife and kids decided Ms. Peepers needed a little love and tenderness after having been deserted.  Later that day they delivered Ms. Peepers to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota in hopes that it would overcome its inability to attain forward movement as it was like one of those wind up toys that flipped backwards every time it tried to move.  Located in Roseville, MN, the Wildlife Rehab Center was a pleasant discovery.  A deer casually wandering the grounds near the parking lot greeted us upon arrival.  Inside we met a south-metro resident who had brought in a baby great horned owl that had fallen from the nest and was being attacked by crows.  On the way back to our car we met a couple of young boys in the parking lot who were delivering a nest of baby blue jays that had fallen from a tree.

Even though Ms. Peepers did not make it in the end, it was amazing to see the work being done at the Wildlife Rehab Center.  Bless their hearts.
