Tenkara – an encore

It was fun catching a bunch of scrappy bluegills so I decided to head back to Hyland Lake on Sunday, June 23.   This time I went armed with a black hopper fly that I thought would mimic the dragonflies that were buzzing around the day before.  Yesterday I noticed that when the dragonflies got too close to the surface a fish would take a swipe at them.

Top water fishing is always a blast and I thought the hopper pattern dabbled on the surface with my Tenkara rod might generate some action.  My goal was to catch a few for the frying pan and although it took me awhile to locate a school of fish, once I found them they eagerly pounced on the hopper.  Those that missed it generally came back and devoured it.  A lot of times it seems like you just lip hook bluegills and sunfish but these fish were inhaling it.  I will need to remember a forceps the next time as the needle nose pliers was a bit big.

Given the mass of bluegills swimming around I couldn’t help but think there had to be a few bass lurking around.  Putting the Tenkara rod back in the truck I took a few casts with my bait casting rod and reel and caught a couple of 12″ – 14″ inch bass on a bluegill patterned spinner bait.  No monsters but aggressive fish that threw in a couple of jumps for kicks.
