Two A Days – part 2

July 8, 2013

It turned out to be a gorgeous, sunny afternoon as Nicholas and I made our way to Lake Parley with Grandpa.  The only bummer was a strong South/Southeast wind that was frothing the water with white caps.  Our plan had been to throw some crankbaits along the breaks in the NW corner for walleyes but that plan was scrapped after a few casts as the wind was just too much too bear.

Finding a little nook out of the wind we changed tactics and tossed jigs tipped with crappie minnows on the inside of the weed line.  I caught a scrappy crappie on the first cast and that pretty much set the tone for the next hour or so as we caught a crappie or sunfish on what seemed like every cast.  Nothing huge, but my son had a blast. Then, to top it off, he narrowly missed landing a good-sized northern pike that struck the minnow patterned crankbait that he was trolling.  He got it all the way to the boat before it thrashed itself free to swim again.  Bummer.

Generally, I would insert a photo of my smiling son holding aloft a prized crappie.  However, my phone died before I could transfer the photo and so, no photo.

Next up, Saylorville Spillway, Des Moines, IA.
