Lake Harriet – The third time is a charm

February 14, 2013

December 2, 2012

I must admit it seemed odd to be fishing open water on December 2, 2012, but I figured what the heck.  Having stopped at Gander Mountain for some Golden Shiners I hit the water at a few minutes before 8 a.m.  I couldn’t have asked for a better day – calm, slightly foggy and best of all, the entire lake to myself.  Fishing with a homemade “Lindy” type rig I trolled break lines in hopes that I’d catch something.  The fact that there were no shore fishermen wasn’t exactly promising…

There is not a tremendous amount of underwater structure on Lake Harriet, but there are a few points and inside turns.  Working back I felt a solid thump in about 20′ of water and let the line run before setting the hook.  Fish, I thought eagerly as I set the hook and was met with what felt like a solid snag.  Nothing, no movement just a snag followed by the snap of my line.  That was weird I thought as I had broke the line off at the swivel.  Scrambling to assemble another rig I was soon back fishing.  Not more than few minutes later another solid thump.  Hmm, just like the last one..give it time I told myself.  Setting the hook I was greeted by a similar feeling.  This time though I felt a slight tug and loosened the drag further, fish on.

It felt like a good fish and I let it run for several minutes as it stayed deep. Soon enough it came to the surface and there it was a solid musky hooked perfectly in the corner of its mouth.  photo

A few runs and one jump later I scooped it up with my net and let it go.

Not the 50″ plus inch fish that I dream about, but a respectable 38″ fish and a nice way to end the year.
