The Importance of Catch and Release fishing

Writing about my trip to Lake Harriet reminded me of the following nugget I read in the lake assessment of Lake Harriet prepared by the Minnesota DNR:

“Summer netting conducted during standard population assessments does not index muskellunge population abundance accurately. Consequently, during the July evaluation, only 3 muskellunge were sampled at 36.6, 38.0, and 39.6 inches. A spring trap-netting assessment targeting adult muskellunge was conducted in 2009. This survey produced 20 muskellunge averaging 40.4 inches and 15.4 lbs. Seventy percent were 38 inches or longer and 35% were 42 inches or longer. The largest measured 48.4 inches and 27.6 lbs. The adult muskellunge population was estimated at 0.33 fish/acre (110 total fish).”

The last sentence, “the adult muskellunge population was estimated at 0.33  fish/acre (110 total fish)”, really grabbed my attention.  I’m the first to admit that I know practically nothing when it comes to fish biology, however the number of adult muskellunge is stunningly low.  110 fish is a small number considering the amount of pressure Lake Harriet receives.  It just goes to show the importance of catch and release fishing.  With numbers that low it would be easy for the population of adult muskellunge to be wiped out in a single season.

Thanks for practicing catch and release.
