Snelling Lake

November 6, 2012

October 2, 2012

The forecast calls for another perfect fall day and I’m plotting how to get another fishing excursion in before the snow flies.

I drive by Snelling Lake on a weekly basis.  Since it is a lake I’ve never fished I decide to give it a shot for an hour after work.  Named after Ft. Snelling, which lies a few ticks to the Northwest, it is sandwiched between the end of the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport runway and the Minnesota River. Let me tell you, it is a different experience to have a steady stream of airplanes taking off right over your head.  The lake is tiny, void of underwater humps or islands, spring fed and full of fishy looking lily pads and other assorted slop.

There is a steady breeze blowing out of the South, but the lake is protected by the surrounding hills.  Once I clear the emergent vegetation that chokes the boat landing I start firing a white spinner bait that is immediately pounced on by a northern pike.

The first of 7 pike, I can’t seem to keep them off the hook. In the process I loose the spinner bait to an eager pike, get the ripple shad sawed off by another toothy critter, and manage one last fish on a buzz bait.

Tomorrow is going to be beautiful too.  Three days in a row and I’m pondering how to make it four.  I will be heading to Milwaukee in a week for a work related conference.  Oh, and since I’m there, I’ve planned a trip to fish for Chinook (“King”) Salmon.  With that thought in mind I decide to save my fishing Mojo for the Salmon.

Nice pike, especially for being never having fished the lake before.

Thanks for checking out Hats on the Water and thanks for the comment regarding the pike. Not a giant, but a fun fish to catch. I look forward to following your blog.
